Dear fellow meditator,

MEDITATION 2009
This time of year brings to attention the
importance of family and friend relationships.
This is typically a time of celebration and
getting together.
For many this is joyous and for others there
can be considerable anxiety and stress as existing
relationships are not harmonious or as connected as they
should be.
Read on to practice
a meditation that will bring peace and calm for everyone.

Mind and Its Potential Conference
Having attended the recent
Mind and Its Potential Conference in Sydney with
extraordinary speakers from around the world, I was inspired
by the consistent reference to meditation and mindfulness
from such a diverse range of the world's top scientists,
psychologists, psychiatrists, neuroscientists, neurosurgeons
with the Dalai Lama delivering the keynote speech.

A powerful and simple Mindfulness
exercise
|
Sit down, relax and breath
deeply through your nose.
Let your eyes close and be aware
of your breath going in and out.
Move your attention to
your body, one part at a time, noting sensations
of cold, hot, tight, tension and anything else
you identify.
After a few minutes, start
listening to sounds in the room, without
thinking about them. Just listen, while still
maintaining an awareness of your body and your
breath.
In 10 minutes or so, or when it
feels right, open your eyes and look around as
if you are seeing for the first time.
Let your eyes rest on an object
for half a minute, examining it without talking
about it in your mind.
Then move to another object, and
another, while still maintaining an awareness of
your body, your breathing, and any sounds.
Just stay in this state of
mindfulness for a few minutes, until you are
ready to get up.
When you are aware of your body,
breath and immediate environment, you are more
fully "in the moment". |

Your mind is in a receptive state, with
fewer mental distractions that can prevent clear thinking.
An exercise like this before important
mental tasks will give you greater focus and concentration.
The New Year's newsletter will
bring you some of the important developments from the brain
science research that have implications for living a more
enriched and satisfying life. Particularly the positive
indications for increased brain health and learning as we
get older and the measures we can take to reduce the chances
of age related degeneration such as dementia and Alzheimer's
related illness.
